Chapter 6 - Force and Motion-II - Problems - Page 140: 3a

Answer

199N

Work Step by Step

The Force of friction that must be overcome in order to move the bureau is given by F = N*mu where N is the normal force and mu is the coefficient of friction. It is given that the coefficient of friction is 0.45 so now we need to find the Normal Force. To find this we can list all the forces in the y direction acting on the Bureau, which are the weight and the Normal Force. Since the bureau is not accelerating in the y direction, the Net force must also be zero so we have that 0 = N - mg where mg is the weight. Therefore we find that N = mg or the weight of the bureau, which is 45kg * 9.81 = 441.5 N. Now we take this times the coefficient and get that Ff (Frictional Force) = 199N. Therefor,e it would take a force of 199N to start the bureau moving
