In Figure 13.22, the force pressing on the piston is directly transmitted to the piston and determines the increased pressure in the fluid. In Figure 13.23, the pressure in the air above the fluid in the reservoir determines the fluid pressure. The air compressor determines that, and this pressure is independent of the surface area of the interface between the compressed air and the fluid.
