Chapter 5 - Work and Energy - Learning Path Questions and Exercises - Exercises - Page 175: 23

Answer

a) (1) more than b) $W_{required}= \frac{kx_{2}^{2}}{2}-\frac{ kx_{1}^{2}}{2}=\frac{k}{2}(x_{2}^{2}-x_{1}^{2})$ To stretch the spring from 0 to 10 cm, $W=\frac{50\,N/m}{2}((10\,cm)^{2}-0^{2})=0.25\,J$ To strech the spring from 10 cm to 20 cm, $W=\frac{50\,N/m}{2}((20\,cm)^{2}-(10\,cm)^{2})=0.75\,J$ We can see that the work required to strech the spring from 10 cm to 20 cm is more than that required to stretch it from 0 to 10 cm.
