Chapter 7 - Configurations - 7.3 Nomenclature - Problems - Page 148: 7.44

Work Step by Step

1. Name the compound by its substituents, parent, unsaturations and functional group: ** First identify the parental chain, and where you should start counting the carbons. - Substituents: 2-fluoro; - Parent: pent; - Unsaturations: 2-en; - Functional group: -e; 2. Identify the double bonds and stereocenters. - 1 double bond on the second carbon. - No stereocenters. 3. Identify their configurations: The double bond has on the left: - Fluoro (Top) - Methyl (Bottom) So the fluoro has higher priority. On the right: - Ethyl (Top) - Hydrogen (Bottom) So the ethyl has higher priority. - Both ethyl and fluoro are on "top", therefore, this double bond is "(Z)". 4. Put all the parts together: (2Z)-2-fluoropent-2-ene
