Chapter 5 - Nomenclature - 5.6 Numbering - Problems - Page 101: 5.59

Work Step by Step

1. Find the parent chain and were we should start couting the carbons: - The parent chain will be everything but the 2 groups of 1 carbon. (It has to contain the triple bond and be as large as possible.) - We should start counting the carbons from the left, since the triple bond is closer to this side. 2. Functional group: - There are no functional groups: "e". 3. Insaturations and number of carbons on the parent chain: - Triple bond on carbons 2 and 3: "2-yn" - 6 carbons in the parent chain: "hex" 4. Substitutents: - 2 methyl groups on carbon 4: "4,4-dimethyl" 5. Stereoisomerism: - No stereoisomerism (It doesn't have double bonds.) 6. Put them all together: 4,4-dimethylhex-2-yne
