Chapter 2 - Atoms, Molecules, and Ions: Matter Starts Here - Problems - Page 71: 86

Answer

(a) potassium phosphate (b) potassium oxide (c) potassium sulfite (d) potassium nitrate (e) potassium nitrite

Work Step by Step

In naming ionic compounds, we keep the name of the first element as-is and remove the last syllable of the second element and add −ide to it. We do not add prefixes to any of the element names as is done for molecular compounds. For compounds that contain polyatomic ions, we refer to the table of polyatomic ions on page 60 of the textbook. The polyatomic ion's name does not change; just keep the name as-is. For these compounds, they all contain potassium (K). We keep the name potassium as-is and change the ending of the second element unless potassium is bonded to a polyatomic ion. (a) potassium phosphate (b) potassium oxide (c) potassium sulfite (d) potassium nitrate (e) potassium nitrite
