Work Step by Step

Diagonal relationships in the periodic table exist between certain pairs of elements in different periods but the same group. For example, Be and Al exhibit similarities in some properties, as do B and Si. These diagonal relationships are rationalized by considering the similarity in the effective nuclear charge experienced by their valence electrons and the comparable electron configurations. In diagonal relationships, elements have similar atomic sizes, ionization energies, and electron affinities because their electronic structures and effective nuclear charges are similar. While they are not exactly the same as in the vertical group, they are comparable due to their position in the periodic table.
