Work Step by Step
Graphite’s structure consists of flat sheets of carbon atoms bonded together as interconnected hexagonal rings. The electrons in the extended pi bonding network within a sheet make graphite a good electrical conductor in the direction of the plane of the sheets. But diamond is not a good electrical conductor, because it is an extremely strong network covalent solid, where all of the carbon atoms are covalently bonded, and no electrons are free to conduct electricity.
