Answer
Oxygen forms double bonds in O2, but sulfur forms single bonds in S8 because sulphur can not form stronger double bond .
It can form σ– bond as well as π– bond between O and O atoms and exists as O2. Atomic size of sulphur is bigger. It can not form π – bond together with s – bond between S and S atoms. To satisfied its valency it forms S8 molecule in which all atoms of sulphur bonded with only σ– bond .
