Chapter 11 - Intermolecular Forces and Liquids and Solids - Questions & Problems - Page 514: 11.111

Answer

(a) According to kinetic molecular theory, a gas is composed of molecules that are separated from each other by distances far greater than their own dimensions; in liquids, the separation of molecule decreases; and in solids, the separation is the least. As the distance between the particles decreases, the ease of compressibility decreases from gas to liquid to solid. (b) In solids, the molecules/atoms are held together very strongly by strong attractive forces in a rigid 3-dimensional manner. Therefore, the molecules are free to move sliding over each other. (c) Molecules in the gas phase are separated by large distances, and the distance of separation decreases in liquid and is the least in solids. So the volume of a given amount of material increases as it changes from solid to liquid to gas.
