Chapter 1 - Intermolecular Forces and Liquids and Solids - Questions & Problems - Page 510: 11.18

Answer

a) Hydrogen bond and dispersion forces b) Dispersion forces c) Dispersion forces d) Covalent bond

Work Step by Step

a) The water molecules in ice, since there's an H bonded directly to an O atom, form highly polar bonds that hold attractive hydrogen bonding intermolecular forces. All molecules, because of their existent electron cloud, will feel dispersion forces. b) Molecular bromine is nonpolar but as with other molecules interactions, will feel dispersion forces only. c) Solid iodine is only held together by dispersion intermolecular forces. d) The single covalent bond in F$_{2}$ must be broken for them to dissociate into single F atoms. This is an example of intramolecular forces, not intermolecular forces.
