Chapter 9 - Section 9.1 - Overview of Digestion - Check Your Progress - Page 171: 1

Answer

Digestive Tract Organs: Mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus. Accessory Organs: Salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, pancreas.

Work Step by Step

Digestive Tract Organs: The mouth chews food and prepares it for swallowing. The pharynx is the passageway where food is swallowed. The esophagus is the passageway where peristalsis pushes food to the stomach. The stomach secretes acid and digestive enzyme to break down food and send chyme to the small intestine. The large intestine absorbs water and salt to form feces. The rectum stores and regulates elimination of feces. The anus controls the release of waste from the digestive tract. Accessory Organs: The salivary glands secrete saliva which contains digestive enzyme. The liver produces and stores nutrients and produces bile. The gallbladder stores bile from the liver and sends it to the small intestine. The pancreas produces pancreatic juice, sends digestive enzymes to the small intestine, and secretes insulin into the blood after eating.
