Chapter 9 - Assess - Page 194: 15

Answer

Amino acids that the body can produce are called non-essential amino acids. This means it is not absolutely necessary to include them as dietary nutrients because the body can synthesize them to make up for dietary deficiencies.

Work Step by Step

The nonessential amino acids include the following: Alanine, arginine, asparagine, aspartic acid, cysteine, glutamine, glutamic acid, glycine, proline, serine and threonine. Note: Non-essential does not mean these amino acids are not needed for good nutrition. It simply means it is not absolutely necessary for us to ingest them in our diets, because the body can synthesize them from other substances and prevent deficiencies.
