Chapter 6 - Section 6.3 - White Blood Cells and Defense Against Disease - Check Your Progress - Page 121: 3

Answer

Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) occurs when white blood cells lack the enzyme adenosine deaminase. This prevents the development of B and T lymphocytes making it impossible for white blood cells to protect the body against infections. Leukemia is the uncontrolled production of white cells by the body. Many of these blood cells are abnormal and as a result do not protect the body from pathogens and viruses as they are intended to. Epstein-Barr viruses (EBVs) lead to infectious mononucleosis, an infection due to the lymphocytes being mononuclear. Symptoms include fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph glands. This is one of the most common viruses in humans and symptoms generally subside within two months, although the infection remains present in white blood cells for life.
