Chapter 6 - Section 6.3 - White Blood Cells and Defense Against Disease - Check Your Progress - Page 121: 1

Answer

Different types of white blood cells have different functions. Neutrophils are specifically essential for engulfing cellular debris through phagocytosis. Eosinophils specialize in protecting the body against large invaders such as parasitic worms. Basophils are responsible for releasing histamine which causes physical reactions in response to allergens. Lymphocytes are specifically responsible for protecting the body against poisonous substances. Monocytes are the largest types of white blood cells. These cells engulf and destroy pathogens through phagocytosis, and they also stimulate other types of white blood cells.
