In ex vivo gene therapy modification is made in the genes of cells in tissue culture. The modified cells are then introduced into the cells/tissues of the patient as a form of therapy. In contrast in vivo gene therapy involves the injecting/introducing the therapeutic agent directly into the body cells of the living patient.
