The alveoli serve as the site for the gas exchange in the lungs. It is surrounded by membranes thus the gas exchange is through diffusion. Air then reaches the capillaries that contain red blood cells that pick up the oxygen that is eventually pumped through the body. The carbon dioxide is reverted back to the alveoli and gets exhaled through the nose and mouth.
