Answer
The patella or knee cap is a trianguloid sesamoid bone embedded in the knee tendon. At birth, it is cartilaginous, but ossifies between 3-6 years of age. The broad base of the patellar triangle is superior, and the pointed apex of the structure is inferior. There are two shallow articular facets on the posterior surface of the patella for articulating with the femur; of these the lateral is the larger.
Work Step by Step
The tendon of the quadriceps femoris muscle runs from its position in the anterior of the thigh to the patella ;it then continues as the patellar ligament connecting patella and the tibia -- a ligament connects bone to bone.
