Chapter 8 - Section 8.5 - Study Guide - Assess Your Learning Outcomes - Page 272: 1

Answer

The three bones that make up the pelvic girdle are the left and right coxal (hip) bones and the central sacrum (+coccyx).. The lateral coxal bones are joined to the sacrum by the sacroiliac joint -- where the articular surfaces of the hip bones and the sacrum meet. Below the sacro-iliac joint and anteriorly, the two coxal bones are joined by an interpubic pad of fibrocartilage to form the pubic symphysis joint. The pubic symphysis can be palpated as a hard prominence just above the genital area.

Work Step by Step

The femoral region of the lower limb includes the long femoral bone and the somewhat trianguloid patella in each thigh (total of 2/thigh). The crural region of the lower limb ( anatomical leg) extends from the knee to the ankle. The bones of this region (in each limb) are a thick weight-bearing medial tibia, and a delicate lateral fibula ( 2 thigh bones /limb)). The bones of the ankle make up the tarsal region of the limb. The tarsal bones articulate with the crural bones. From heel to toes these are the calcaneus, talus, navicular, cuneiform ( medial , intermediate, lateral) and the cuboid ( total 7/foot) There are five metatarsals in each foot namely, first metatarsal right; 2nd metatarsal right; third metatarsal right , fourth metatarsal right and fifth metatarsal right. There ares also first to fifth metatarsal left.-- a total of 5 /foot) The bones of the toes are the phalanges . They include first proximal and first distal phalanges of the hallux; the second proximal, middle and distal phalanges; the third proximal, middle and distal phalanges; the fourth proximal, middle and distal phalanges; and the fifth proximal, middle and distal phalanges( of the little finger). This makes up a total of 14 phalanges in each foot Femur 1,+patella1,+tibia and fibula 2,+tarsals 7,+metatarsals 5,+phalanges 14=30 bones in each lower limb.
