Several follicles develop during one cycle under the influence of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). A cohort of primordial follicles start developing together; some of these progress to primary follicle stage in about 5 days; however, only one follicle makes it through the secondary (preantral) follicle stage to become a Graafian (antral) follicle. This is the one follicle that ovulates per cycle, but about 400 are lost by atresia each month.
