Work Step by Step

Colostrum has been described as "first milk" It is a thick yellowish milk-like substance secreted by mammary glands towards the end of pregnancy. It is usually available for the bab for four to seven days after birth. It contains less fat, but more protein than milk. Colostrum has some vitamins and minerals , but milk has more micronutrients. The yellowish color is due to high levels of beta-carotene. Colostrum has high level of antibodies which protect the baby against infection; it also has a mildly diuretic action which helps the baby pass the meconium (the greenish first stool) after birth.
