Chapter 1 - Section 1.6 - Study Guide - Assess Your Learning Outcome - Page 24: 7

Answer

Positive feedback differs from negative feedback, as the former causes enhancements in the stimulus and the latter counteracts it to return to homeostasis. Positive feedback can be observed in childbirth, where labor causes the secretion of more oxytocin, which in turn trigger more contractions. A harmful example of positive feedback can be seen in asphyxiation, when inhalation of toxic air decreases blood oxygen levels, signaling to the body to intake more air in an attempt to acquire necessary oxygen.

Work Step by Step

Oxytocin secretion in childbirth is managed by the posterior pituitary gland. The medulla oblongata of the brain is responsible for managing breathing. This structure is stimulated in the event of asphyxiation.
