Answer

Price of dress is,\[\$200\].

Work Step by Step

Let \[x\] be the original price of dress. 1stit is reduced by\[40%\], therefore, the remaining price of the dress is, \[\left( 1-0.4 \right)x=0.6x\] Thus, after 1st reduction price of dress is\[0.6x\]. After2nd Reduction by \[40%\] of reduced price, the price of the dress is, \[\begin{align} & 0.6\left( 1-0.4 \right)x=0.6\left( 0.6 \right)x \\ & =0.36x \end{align}\] After 2nd reduction price of dress is\[0.36x\]. After both the reduction price of dress is \[\$72\]. Therefore, \[\begin{align} & 0.36x=72 \\ & x=200 \end{align}\] It means price of dress is \[\$200\]. Hence, the original price of the dress is, \[\$200\].
