Chapter 4 - Number Representation and Calculation - 4.3 Computation in Positional Systems - Exercise Set 4.3 - Page 234: 20

Answer

It is given that these two numbers are in base 8, before subtracting them, we need to understand the rules we follow while subtracting them. \[\begin{align} {{462}_{eight}} & \\ -{{177}_{eight}} & \\ \end{align}\] We start performing subtraction in the right column, \[{{2}_{eight}}-{{7}_{eight}}\] Since we cannot subtract 7 from 2, we will borrow a group of 8 from the left column. This gives a sum \[{{2}_{eight}}+8=10\] now we subtract 7 from 10. \[\begin{align} {{462}_{eight}} & \\ -\underline{{{177}_{eight}}} & \\ {{263}_{eight}} & \\ \end{align}\] After subtracting the right column, we subtract the left one and here we subtract 7 from remaining 5+8=13. Hence by this subtraction of base 8, we have the answer \[{{263}_{eight}}\]
