Chapter 2 - Section 2.6 - Symmetry and Transformations - Exercises - Page 116: 13b

Answer

To reflect a figure across a line, draw dashed lines through each point that is not on the original line. These dashed lines should be perpendicular to the line across which the figure in being reflected. Then, make the new point on the dashed line the same distance away from the center line as the original point. Note, any points that are already on the center line across which the figure is being reflected do not need to be changed.

Work Step by Step

Recall, when we say that we are going to "reflect" a figure across a line, we are saying that we are going to make what is on both sides of the line identical. (In other words, if we were to fold the paper over the line, the two figures drawn should be on top of each other.) Therefore, if we want to do this reflection, we must make sure that corresponding points are the same distance from the center line.
