Chapter P - P.3 - Functions and Their Graphs - Exercises - Page 27: 42

Answer

The x-axis represents time in minutes. The y-axis represents the distance from home in miles.

Work Step by Step

The student begins at home so the graph starts at the origin. A positive slope means that the student is traveling towards the school, so the first part of the graph should have a positive slope. Then the negative slope means that the student is driving in the opposite direction (back home). Lastly, the student quickly drives to school, similar to the first part of the graph except the slope is steeper to show the faster driving speed.
