Chapter 1 - Section 1.3 - The Real Numbers - Exercise Set - Page 43: 98

Answer

Natural numbers are numbers used for counting, { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ... }

Work Step by Step

Natural numbers are numbers used for counting, { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ... } Zero is not a natural number, because we do not count objects that are not there. If there are any objects to count, we start with 1,... which is why 1 is the smallest natural number. The greatest natural number does not exist, because if you select one to be the greatest, you add 1 and it is not the greatest any more.
