Chapter 2 - Functions and Graphs - Exercise Set 2.1 - Page 224: 46

Answer

the graph of g(x) is obtained by shifting the graph of f(x) UP by 1 unit.

Work Step by Step

Build a table with three columns. In the first column, place values for x: $-2,-1,0,1,2$ as instructed. In the second column, calculate $f(-2),f(-1),f(0),f(1),f(2)$ Third column: calculate function values $g(-2),g(-1),g(0),g(1),g(2)$ Points that lie on the graph of f are (x, f(x)). Plot the five points from the table and join as in Fig 1.5. (on the image : red) Points that lie on the graph of g are (x, g(x)). Plot the five points from the table and join as in Fig 1.5. (on the image : blue) Looking at the blue graph (of g(x)) we see that the graph of g(x) is obtained by shifting the graph of f(x) UP by 1 unit.
