Chapter 7 - Section 7.6 - Proportions and Problem Solving with Rational Equations - Exercise Set - Page 538: 23

Answer

If both the conveyors work together, then they would complete the work of moving 300 pounds of cans in 1.5 minutes, or 1 minute 30 seconds.

Work Step by Step

Given: The large conveyor mover 300 pounds in 2 minutes. Thus in one minute, the large conveyor belt should move $\frac{300}{2}$ = $150$ pounds Also, in 6 minutes , a smaller conveyor moves 300 pounds. Thus, in one minute the conveyor will move $\frac{300}{6}$ = 50 pounds. So, if both conveyors work together, in one minute they would move 150 + 50 = 200 pounds. Now, we know that 200 pounds can be moved by both the conveyors in one minute. Thus 300 pounds can be moved in $\frac{300}{200}$ = 1.5 minutes.
