Chapter 6 - Radical Functions and Rational Exponents - Mid-Chapter Quiz - Page 389: 14

Answer

$5\sqrt {3}$

Work Step by Step

Before we can add or subtract terms in this exercise, we must transform the terms so that the radicands are the same. Only then can we perform the operations we are asked to do. Expand the radicands in all of the radicals so that they are rewritten as the product of a perfect square and another number: $\sqrt {16 \cdot 3} - 3\sqrt {9 \cdot 3} + 2\sqrt {25 \cdot 3}$ Take the square roots of all the perfect squares: $4\sqrt {3} - 3 \cdot 3\sqrt {3} + 2 \cdot 5\sqrt {3}$ Multiply coefficients to simplify: $4\sqrt {3} - 9\sqrt {3} + 10\sqrt {3}$ Add or subtract from left to right since the terms have the same radicand: $5\sqrt {3}$
