Chapter 12 - Data Analysis and Probability - 12-3 Measures of Central Tendency and Dispersion - Practice and Problem-Solving Exercises - Page 730: 19

Answer

Player 1: mean = 0.3002, range = 0.062 Player 2: mean = 0.3015, range = 0.029

Work Step by Step

To find the mean, we add up all of the values and divide by the total number of values. Mean A: $\frac{0.265+0.327+0.294+0.316+0.281+0.318}{6} = 0.3002$ Mean B: $\frac{0.304+0.285+0.312+0.291+0.303+0.314}{6} = 0.3015$ To find the range, we subtract the smallest term from the largest term. Range A: $0.327-0.265=0.062$ Range B: $0.314-0.285=0.029$ From the mean, we see that Player 2 (B) is a better player than Player 1 (A) (a larger mean means more hits are hit). From the range, we see that Player 2 is also a more consistent player, while player 1 is less consistent (a larger range means less consistency).
