Dick longs to be liked by others. How do you think this tendency affects his interactions with Nicole when he first sees her again after writing letters to her for so long?
Students should be able to come up with hypotheses based on what they've read of Dick thus far in the book, especially in Book 2, Chapter i and the finer details of his studies and younger life. They should also closely examine his conversations with Franz and Dr. Dohmler about Nicole, and compare and contrast how the three men approach Nicole and her treatment.
What similarities do you see in the way Dick is initially attracted to Nicole in the beginning of Book 2 and Rosemary in Book 1?
