    Visualizing “The Offshore Pirate”

    Kind of Activity:

    Mixed Media

    Objective:

    In this activity, students will make a graphic novel for “The Offshore Pirate” to deepen their understanding of figurative language and the “story-like” quality of this work.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.4

    Structure:

    Part 1:

    Students should choose a scene from “The Offshore Pirate” to turn into their graphic novel. This should be a very short passage (a couple of pages). Students should then extract the dialogue and setting descriptions during the dialogue—where the characters are when they are speaking, etc.
