Magic's Promise is an epic fantasy novel by American author Mercedes Lackey. It is the second novel in the Valdemar: The Last Herald Mage series and seventh in the Valdemar universe. It was published in 1990 by DAW books. A young-adult, romantic tale explores Vanyel Ashkevron, the most powerful Herald-Mage ever, at war with a wild magic that is terrorizing the land.

Most Heralds have either perished or on the brink of one. Even Vanyel grows weaker as the wild magic becomes a menace to society. Vanyel is on high alert as he hears whispers of a holocaust ravaging an allied kingdom. Together with Yfandes, they seek into the darkness in an attempt to unfold the mystery.

In this strange land, a masquerade plot might be unraveling that will surely have deadly consequences. Will Vanyel conquer or be conquered? This one might just not bet he one that anyone wins. Hope is always alive in this epic coming-of-age high fiction. Magic's Promise as with other Valdemar novels is groundbreaking and award winning.
