Logan
Played by Hugh Jackman, Logan is a man at the end of his life. Poisoned by the adamantium which coats his skeleton, Logan is in pain both physically and mentally, haunted by a violent and traumatic past. To cope with this, he drinks heavily and has eschewed his superhero past. He is, in essence, damaged.
In the film, Logan becomes the caretaker for an ailing Charles Xavier. He collects Xavier's medicine and spends much of his night driving people around. When a young woman and a girl named Laura reach out for his help, though, Logan gets a new lease on life and becomes more energized. To that end, Logan sacrifices himself at the end of the film for the good of Laura and her friends.
Charles Xavier
Like Logan, Charles Xavier (played by Patrick Stewart) is a dying man. A 90 year-old man, Xavier is suffering from debilitating and devastatingly violent seizures, seizures which have killed hundreds of people in the past. His telepathy is still in tact, but his seizures and dementia has impacted him tremendously. A once intelligent man has now been reduced to a crippled man.
Stewart stated that "... this is probably the end of this franchise for me. But the thing about science fiction and fantasy is that you can never, ever say it's the end, it's over."
