The Final Heroic Journey of the Wolverine 9th Grade

The year is 2029. The world has seen no new mutants in 25 years; the few mutants who remain live in hiding, fearful of being found out by a world who doesn’t see outsiders in a positive light. Among those in hiding are 90-year-old Charles Xavier (also called Professor X) and Logan, who is being poisoned by the Adamantium which has long been in his body. Fundamentally though (as the title suggests), this film is about a man once called Wolverine. A man who has lived as long as three men. In what is his final adventure, Logan undergoes what Joseph Campbell called “the hero’s journey,” in which a hero goes on an adventure and – despite a number of trials – perseveres and accomplishes his goal(s).

The first step in a revised version of Campbell’s hero’s journey is called “ordinary world,” in which audiences witness the hero in their normal, unimpeded environment. In Logan, we witness Logan in his normal environment, driving spoiled rich kids around in a limousine and taking care of Professor X, who, without medication, has devastating headaches that result in a profound amount of death and destruction.
