The story centers on an a future in which people stop aging when they turn 25 years old. The caveat is that they will die when they turn 26 unless they have the ability to purchase more time on their life clocks. The themes deal largely with elitism, class structure, poverty and injustice for the poor while the rich maintain, by hoarding all of the time, the power.

Roger Deakins most notably was the films cinematographer and chose, for the first time in his career, to shoot entirely digital. Critically, the film received some critical praise, including a 3/4 stars from Roger Ebert, but the vast majority of the critics giving it a below average grade, including a 36% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Critics were divided in their opinion of In Time, with some praising the film's thought-provoking themes and visual style, while others criticized its lack of originality and inconsistent pacing. Despite this, the film has developed a cult following over the years, and is considered a must-see for fans of science fiction and dystopian films.
