The Symbol of Authority

Authority is symbolized by Queen Gloriana, who controls several colonies. Besides being a female, Gloriana emblems power, and she can coordinate her governance structure to ensure that the affairs of her colonies are run according to her expectations.

The Desmond Rebellion

The Desmond rebellion symbolizes revolution against the Queen's authority. For instance, the people of Ireland are tired of the oppressive rule of England, and they want to get their freedom. Consequently, the best way to communicate their intentions to the Queen is through a rebellion.

The symbolism of determination

The treacherous and cunning nature of the Irish people symbolizes their determination to reject the oppressive rule of England. When Spenser is sent to stop the Desmond rebellion, the Irish people are reluctant, proving that they are ungovernable by being rude and deceitful.
