Dirty Dancing Quotes

Quotes

“You told me everyone was alike and deserved a fair break. But you meant everyone who was like you. You told me you wanted me to change the world, to make it better. But you meant by becoming a lawyer or a Doctor and marrying someone from Harvard.”

Frances “Baby” Houseman

The quotation alludes to the two main themes in the film; one is the issue of social classes and second the act of kindness. Baby confronts his Dad questioning his flawed perception of the world and how her family indeed lives in the rich people ‘bubble’. Her Dad, Jake, is seen being unfair towards Johnny by making false assumptions about him, furthermore showing the class prejudice Baby is addressing. She is a compassionate individual thus her kindness shows no limits regarding social class. Thus, the assertion expresses her notion in terms of doing the right thing which surpasses any social constructions.

“So I'm gonna do my kind of dancing with a great partner, who's not only a terrific dancer. Somebody who's taught me that there are people willing to stand up for other people no matter what it costs them. Somebody who's taught me about the kind of person I wanna be.”

Johnny Castle

Johnny’s statement further accentuates the impact Baby has on the people around her, either by receiving her help or learning from her. In this case, Johnny has been impacted by both in that she receives her aid in exonerating him from false accusations, also learning kindness from her. The film does not only delve into the love that sprouts between two people who share a connection but shows its influence on one’s character. They both come from different worlds hence their outlooks are molded by their environment. Therefore their union counts for a lot since it brings a new perspective that is created when they combine their stances.
