    With Doña Isabella, we have another person who deals with the influence of Europe. But unlike other characters, Isabella embraces her European influence. What does Isabella's portrayal suggest about the relationship between Europe and Mexico? Does the novel seem to preference one position or perspective over the other?

    Most students will note that the novel has largely favored European values, even if it saw the dignity of other perspectives.
