In fact, the novel has a mysterious and frightful mood due to many unusual personages such as vampires, shadowhunters, werewolves and magicians.

Protagonist and Antagonist

The main protagonist is Clary. The main antagonist is her father Valentine.

Major Conflict

In this novel the main conflict occurs between good and evil. Shadowhunters try to struggle with Valentine, who wants to get hold of this world and governs demons.


Chronologically, the climax happens on the ship, where Clary and Jace fight against Valentine and his friends from the hell.


From the beginning of this novel it is obviously that the tie of relationship between Clary and Jace will not give them an opportunity to love each other.




This novel alludes the most famous New York City with its sights such as the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty. Also the “Inferno” by Dante is alluded to there, when personages talk about the hell.


Imagery is rather often used when describing environment, like houses, mysterious places, etc.


The major paradox is an existence of the magic, vampires and shadowhunters.


The major parallelism, which can be observed in this novel, is an eternal fight between good and evil.

Metonymy and Synecdoche



All evil spirits, the devil and demons personify the power of darkness, which prevent the main characters to make this world peaceful.
