How would you describe the structure and style of Section II?
Some students may say Section II reads more like an essay than a poem. It is structured with a frame of the Youngman YouTube videos (picture included) to give an idea of the acceptable kind of black anger. Then, Serena Williams’ anger is contrasted against Youngman’s description of black anger to illustrate how Williams’ anger is unacceptable by the dominant culture. Within this frame, Rankine is making an argument—the argument that Williams’ anger is not unacceptable, it is understandable. Yet, in order to have the career she wants, Williams has to keep her anger in check.
