How has the tone of the play changed in this scene?
One might say the play has darkened. Students could and should observe that it wasn't a happy play, per se, in the first two scenes, but this scene seems devoid of any humor or relief. The Soldier's dialogue consists of near-incessant violent images, his actions almost entirely violence against Ian. The play has become not only about war, but a site of devastating warfare and its impact on individuals.
