What have we learned about Ian and Cate's relationship in this scene?
Cate and Ian used to be romantically involved when Cate was younger. Students should note that since Cate is 21 in this scene, she was presumably quite young when first in this relationship, and that it clearly consisted of a deep power imbalance. Ian somehow disappeared from Cate's life, leaving Cate uncertain of where he had gone, but she's expressing a clear willingness to see him now that he has returned. Apparently they did have sex at least once; Cate claims to have another boyfriend now, and is deeply resistant to having sex with Ian.
