What has happened overnight? How do you know?
Overnight, Ian has raped Cate. This is never stated directly, but there are several passages that make it clear: Cate's hostility to Ian and her threatening him with the gun; her statement that last night she "didn't want to do it"; her choice to bite Ian's penis during oral sex and claim that he did the same to her; her reference to bleeding when she "pisses" and "shits."
