Bringing in Technology

The biggest challenge to students reading Billy Budd, Sailor is the novella's use of nautical terminology and references to maritime law. Students should be encouraged to use technology to look up these terms and references to gain a fundamental understanding of the story's concerns.

In the Day 1 activity "Conscription," students will need access to the internet, including educational sites, to look at the history of naval impressment.

In the Day 2 activity "Understanding Allusions I," students will need access to the internet, primarily Wikipedia.

The Day 2 activity "Roles on the Ship" also requires access to Wikipedia and other sites about Naval roles.
