    What are the qualities of a good leader? Does Captain Vere possess those qualities?

    The narrator has a great deal of respect for Captain Vere, and we're supposed to understand that he is an officer in the model of the great Admiral Nelson. But Vere is also a dreamer who cannot connect with his men because he's such an intellectual. This tension gives students a chance to engage with the book. As they consider the qualities of a good leader, they can start to look critically upon Vere's abilities. This will put them in a good position for understanding the end of the book.
