The Core of Columbia

Please tell us what you value most about Columbia and why.


I find the Core irresistible. No, not just the famous Core Curriculum, though Columbia's central philosophy excites me as much as it does for so many others. I'm referring to The Columbia Organisation of Rising Entrepreneurs, which would allow me to work on start-ups with a diverse group of young people, united by our similar passions for technology. Then, with these same people, I would attend meetings for the Gadfly Magazine come a more reflective hour of the evening. To those who still believe in and reach for a better world, there is nowhere more welcoming than the intellectual oasis Columbia creates with its culture of '21st century ambition built upon humanity’s past insights'.

Here, the spring of knowledge never dries because when disciplines constantly extend and challenge each other, students constantly discover unexpected parallels and generative conflicts. I could, for example, compare the academic approach of “Lit Hum” in Freshman year, to that of “BUSI UN3702 Venturing to Change the World” in Sophomore year. My horizons would be broadened when the ideas of Professor Mercer, whose articles on teaching the “Oresteia” in prison transformed my view of Queen Clytemnestra, meet those of Professor Albert, whose recorded...
