American Psycho (film) Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Workout

We watch as Patrick works out in his underwear at home while watching horror movies in the background. This is a symbol of the strange and unnerving combination of vanity and violence that represents Bateman's personality.

Immaculate

We see Bateman's apartment throughout the film. It is pristine, with straight lines and for the most part seems sterile. This is a symbol of his need for control and also his hiding the filth that lies beneath the surface.

Peel

We watch as Patrick goes about his morning routine. As he peels away a mask that he has put on, he says that while someone across from him may feel his flesh when he shakes their hand, he's "simply not there." This is a direct symbol that Bateman is all surface and no soul, which we later discover when he murders multiple women.

Eggshell, Bone, and Paul Allen

Bateman compares his business card to those of the other businessmen in the room. Finally he asks for Paul Allen's card to be shown to him - the work of a rival businessman. Allen's card is immaculate to the point that Bateman can't believe it. He drops it. This is a symbol of is inability to believe that he has been bested in any area where he could stand out. This is his vanity taking over to the point of rage.

Faking

Patrick hops on a fake phone call as Donald Kimball, a detective, comes into his office to question him. This is a symbol of Bateman's willingness to lie in order to appear to be greater that he is coming through. It is also a symbol of his charisma as he attempts to lure in Kimball with it.
