    The Yorkshire Tongue

    Classwide Discussion

    Objective:

    Students will observe and analyze the use of the Yorkshire dialect in the text.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.4, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.6, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.9-10.1, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.9-10.4

    Structure:

    By now, students should have noticed that many of the farmers whom Herriot encounters speak in dialect. Print and distrubute “An Ancient Tongue: a factsheet on Yorkshire Dialect” (http://www.westwindsinyorkshire.co.uk/attachments/AnAncientTongueWestWinds.pdf) and have students read the sheet silently to themselves.

    Ask students to work together to create a list (on the board)...
